Chungnam, Korea
[commissioned]
The site is located in a depopulated rural town tucked under small mountains. Ironically, the only place we could build was where the five existing luscious cherry blossom trees were. Instead of constructing architectural features, we decided to build a backdrop to highlight these existing natural elements as the main features. We embraced all these natural features so that the architecture does not stand in contrast to the background of nature but highlights the nature.
The terrane is characterized by a mountain with a steep boundary that makes access difficult. We used the new building as a connector to engage the flat yarn to the mountain, with a meandering circulation path that creates a harmonious flow through inside and outside of the building. The building stretched over the mountain acts as a bridge between the landscape and the community.
The facilities, including an AI lab, are thoughtfully integrated to complement the natural landscape. This approach ensures that the structure becomes an extension of the village, enhancing the existing landscape rather than overpowering it.
The meandering path connects cafe, office, 100 seats theater, and exhibition space main lobby. The building’s materials were chosen to blend with the environment. Aluminum cladding with a matte finish allows soft shadows to drape over its surfaces, contributing to an elegant and subtle visual effect.
The architecture is completed by nature, with a reflective pool fed by natural spring water from the mountain, adding a serene touch.
The main lobby with a bubble vestibule invites the visitors.
View to the curved surface of exterior envelops wrap around the cherry blossom trees.
The roof becomes a connector of the building and the mountain. Long and deep view from the lowest level and highst level creats easy navigation throughout the building.
The coner cut of the theater entry and the main lobby bubble vestibule is connected visually as well as functionally.
Open view to the nature in the middle of viewing sequence provide a relaxed moment.
4 rooms stay for the artist residency program. Stairs to access from the top level of the building.

The rectilinear form of the plans is wrapped by a curved eave line, creating a complex three-dimensional shape without the need for complicated form-making.
